Theft and Shrinkage
Understand in order to combat effectively : in France, theft represents 7.2 billion € per year. 70,000 shoplifters are reported to the police every year.France is the country with the most theft in Europe, behind the United Kingdom.
In Europe, the average rate of shrinkage(1) is 1,52 %, and 2 % in food stores. To combat this phenomenon, 73% of stores in Europe use anti-theft systems.
Shrinkage, the scourge of any business and a major financial loss, corresponds to the difference between existing stock and the theoretical accounting stock.
Among the causes of shrinkage are supplier errors (5.60%) or internal errors (15%) such as mislabeling, inventory, cashiering, order picking, poorly checked receipts, etc. But the vast majority of shrinkage is still theft from customers (60%) and employees (25%).
The most stolen products are often the most expensive ones of course, but also the easiest to resell : wines and spirits, multimedia accessories, razor blades, textiles...
